Selected files on the Gullah language from the papers of Lorenzo D. Turner held by the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies, Northwestern University, 1988 [microform].

Collection materials span ca. 1915 to ca. 1973 and include linguistic notes, diagrams of mouth-positions for sounds, dictionaries, word lists, and examples of native speech; proverbs and folktales in English; notebooks, clippings, draft and fair copy articles and speeches; programs, bulletins, notes, memorandums, correspondence, pamphlets, and class materials (including outlines, bibliographies, tests, and exercises), and other items. Research materials include notes from interviews with informants on Edisto Island (S.C.), Johns Island (S.C.), and Wadmalaw Island (S.C.), articles on West African words in the Gullah vocabulary, and articles on African personal names used in the Sea Islands. Sound cassettes contain Sea Island and Gullah music and oral histories of Sea Island residents.

African American linguist. A graduate of both Howard and Harvard Universities, Lorenzo Dow Turner (1895-1972) taught English as well as courses about African cultures at Roosevelt University until he retired at the age of 70. Turner's best known studies pertain to the Gullah language and culture of the Georgia and South Carolina Sea Islands. Turner also studied West African languages and Yoruba influences in Brazil.
